A concise summary of the materials necessary to support TCP/IP in Windows NT 4.0. Besides learning new things about Microsoft's implementation of IP, it gave me the necessary information to pass the corresponding test and complete my MCSE. If you are serious about the networking field, and want to be succesful, this book is required reading!
The material covered in this text is indepth and challenging. Still, I was able to pass the TCP/IP adaptive exam on my first effort. It's a tough exam but all the important material is covered and all the material is important. You can't ignore any areas so don't take the exam prematurely. When you think you've got it, go back and study until you thoroughly understand the material. Especially if you aren't very experienced. I gave it four stars because I'd like to see Microsoft handle the end of chapter questions/answers differently to help me resolve my incorrect responses. Hey Microsoft, Coriolis does a nice job on the questions.
Putting heavy faith in Microsoft for developing the proper study material for their MCSE exams - I was a little more then letdown with Internetworking with TCP/IP on Windows NT 4.0.One of the most crucial aspects of TCP/IP is how to create a subnetting table - one not included in this book or many others. Only found by searching on the Internet and very critical for success if you cannot grasp subnets in detail.Book is great when setting up a small network with the first time and using TCP/IP with WINS, DHCP and such. LMHOSTS and HOSTS are covered in good detail.Nice looking on your bookshelf - but missing some important tips and tricks for the real world of TCP/IP and Microsoft's test exam questions.
I passed the exam with flying colors (score 966) on the first try with this kit as my only resource. That says it all. Yes, some of the topics could be covered in more depth. Don't just read the book and expect to be an expert. You have to get hands-on experience with the product (which is enclosed with the kit). Use the book as a starting point, then explore menu options and test different configurations. Experiment with the command line utilities. This process worked great for me. Also enclosed with the kit are copies of the TCP/IP RFCs. Explore them too. Lots of valuable information is found within. This training kit does have prerequisites listed on the box. Be aware of them.
I used only this book to study for the exam and passed with a 931. Everything on the exam is covered in this book. The negatives of this book are (1) The first couple of chapters cover material which is not on the test such as the RFC process and details of the protocol, and (2) the answers to most review questions are not explained well enough. But these are small issues compared to the overall quality of the book. The explainations are clear and thorough. Subnetting is even easy to understand. Basically, if you use this book and don't pass there isn't much hope for you.
This training manual covers everything you need to pass exam #70-59. I just passed today with a score of 879 (I am now an MCSE). This book is readable and concise. I thought the chapter on DNS was weak but the CD-ROM included with the book has the Microsoft White Papers on TCP/IP, WINS and DNS which should be read before taking the exam. Also included is a 120-trial version of NT Server 4.0 which can be used to construct your own training network.
As an instructor and self-study enthusiast, I must congratulate the authors and editors on this fine piece of work. The accompanying two CDs are valuable additions to the book, being a 120-day evaluation version of NT 4.0 Server, and several first class multimedia presentations. The wealth of exercises and questions populating the book ensure in-depth review and understanding of the topics covered. I would like to add a few comments about accuracy. On page 65, the network numbers are incorrect and should read "Networks 1 and 3 represent two routed networks; Network 2 represents the WAN connection between two routers". On page 78, the IP address of computer "E" is incorrect. It should be 109.128.11.11 and as it stands, will not be able to communicate on the LAN. If the authors are interested, I could contact them directly with the rest of the typographical errors I have found in this otherwise highly recommendable work
I have read over the book & i fail the exam. you can't find the most important point for answering for exam questions. If you just want to learn TCP/IP, this book gives you a good concept (for only Windows NT, not for UNIX and other OS). But if you really want to pass the exam, don't rely on this book only but also buy one more book to help yourself. This book really can only gives you the TCP/IP concept on WinNT, NOT FOR ANSWERING THOSE MAJOR QUESTONS IN EXAM TO PASS. By using this book, you will able to answer those mirror questions only .
